31x11.5 swampers on 7" steel
Just got some new tires, 31x11.5 Super Swamper bias.
Manufacturer recomends only an 8" rim for this tire. I am having a hard time finding a set of 8s close to home. Would mounting them on 7" stock rims be such a bad thing?
This rig will seldom ever see pavement so ride is of no concern. Just don't want to damage sidewall, bead or whatever with a bad mismatch on the rim size. zim

Saying it only needs an 8" is horse ****. I run a many of set of 12.50's all on 7" wide wheels, even a few that were 6" wide wheels.. The skinner the wheels the less risk you take on breaking a tire off the bead when aired down and also, the skinner the wheel will make the tire stand a tad taller.. Go with 7"s.

Do you hear banjos?
Yep, Donkey is right!! You will hear a lot of BS about wheel width, and the fact of the matter is, I run a 12.5" tire on a 7" wide wheel, and freakin love it. I plan on continuing to do so. I have been running this combo for about 6 years, with 0 issue what so ever!! HTH!!

but you should still go with manufacturers recommendations
they should have a min and max rim size
yes you can get away with running the wrong size on some tires but not on others

Wow, this is cool. I was going to buy different rims but if I can just use stock rims and put wider tires on I'll do that. I am probably only going up to 10.5 anyway for beach driving and DD

Just bak from town with the new Swampers on the 7" rims. Slapped them on the Cherokee out in the dark so I could check things out and make the final decision about how much lift to put under it. Gonna shoot for 4" rear and 3" up front.
I too have done some fudging with rim/tire size in the past and never had any trouble, just couldn't figure out why this particular tire had no recomended min./max size on the rim width. Strictly 8" they said. We will see.

You shouldnt have any problems, most likely why they say 8" is it has something to do with an 8" wheel being what they test the tires with. No telling but you wont have any problems. Also, show some pics!
Also you said they were bias tires, a friend of mine is running 34x10.50 LTB's which are bias on a set of factory Yota wheels and they are only 6"s wide, been to the woods numerous times, drives on the road, everything.. Never no problems. Not always do you have to go by the books like they only want you to.
