I've been looking around for posts online about this combo. I'd like to hear from people who have run this set up, not the usual "It's not worth it". I'm just looking for real-world answers baecause I couldn't find any off of google. I'm wanting to eke a little more oomph out of my XJ.

I'm running that combo with an ax15, works great but i'm not on the flat lands. If you have an auto you will have plenty of power off the line, but highway speeds may suffer.

I have 31s and 4.10s and i like it a lot. Plenty of power on the highway and the tranny doesn't hunt for gears anymore.

Highway speeds will suffer?? Um......no. I have an auto and at 65 mph the engine is spinning about 2300 rpm. Right in the power band with plenty more when you ask for it. Keep in mind that my overdrive and your 5 gear are 0.75:1 and 0.79:1 respectively. Noone is going to notice that difference at highway speed.

Can you easily chirp the tires? Just curious

You can tear them loose on wet pavement pretty easily and chirp them on dry pavement around a turn fairly easily too. Ya...it's fun!

I just went to 33's and have 4:10 have noticed a little loss of power but goes great off road!! KM2's
I would say if you are going to re-gear and thinking of going higher, like I have, look into gearing 4:88 maybe. If not the 4:10 will be great all around, I had 32's on a month ago.

shouldnt have that big of a problem with 31s... wont really be much change at all. Mines not, and i have a 4 banger with 4:10s on 31s. Before i regeared, I would go the Intake/TB/exhaust route. Will give you alot more UMMPH than you think it would.

I have been running this setup for years and am quite happy with it as an all around solution. It is reasojnable on pavement and I can cruise at any legal speed (and some not so legal) and it is quite good off road and for mild to moderate rock crawning.

Well, I can't talk about my exhaust as it sits because its against the rules . But I' 95% sure that I'm getting a header, cat, and super 10 for Christmas . So when Ihave the intake off I'll clean the TB really good. I might cut out the thermo valve on my intake too so more air gets sucked up. My boss has a cold air intake laying around too that I might ask about. We'll see, you may be right.

Why not a 4.56? This is the half way point for the jump from 4.10 to 4.88. IMHO-
4.10-4.56 for 31-33
4.56-4.88 for 33-35
Beyond that, I don't think you need my input

You know, I've always wanted to throw a set of little tires on and burn'em to the rim
