3 Knocks in 1st?

3 Knocks in 1st?
Just picked up an '89 xj Lerado
4.0, 5 speed with 178,112 mi.
All original as far as I can tell thus far.
I noticed when I put it in 1st, and give it gas, there are 2 or 3 noticeable knocks from what sounds like rear passenger side.
But if I start in 2nd... all is fine
An '86 that a friend had YEARS ago had a problem where it started knocking in 1st... and eventually the wheel started to chirp.
I'm hoping I don't have the same issue... or caught it in time to fix without too much pain
Any thoughts?
