The D30 and ChryCo 8.25 can have up to 4.88s put in them. The D "turdy" five (D35) isn't worth your money or time on a gear swap. And if you were lucky enough like me to have scored an OEM D44 out an 87 XJ well, they can handle up to 5.13s or maybe even 5.38s.

The limit of OEM XJ axles isn't so much the gears available for them as the tire size you try to use with them. I wouldn't put tires larger than 35s on the stock axles and I wouldn't wheel them hard with anything larger than 33s. I wheel with a lot of guys who run 35s with the stock axles but unless they are running Chromo axle shafts they break them regularly. I've found that 33s are a pretty good middle of the road as they give decent clearance and they keep your axles alive even when you beat on them.
