2wd to 4X4?
I would do a search, plenty of info on this subject.
but easiest way is to buy another cherokee with its body destroyed. Because you'll need the transmission, t-case, front axle, both drive shafts, and the linkage. Pretty much the install is straight forward, take out your axle, replace with new. Take out transmission, install new one with t-case, install linkage to t-case, and connect driveshafts. and after a few odds and sods you can drive in 4wd.

To me, by the time you find the axles, the t-case, the right driveshafts, figure out a way to get the linkages and shifter straight, you could buy a decent 4x4 cherokee for similar money and much less headache...

I bought my 96XJ 2wd with 125,000 miles around $600.00 and got my dana 30 , np231 , drive axles and new to me transmission and drive shafts and linkage and shifters for around $800.00 and next week I'm installing everything so it looks like I paid a lil over 1400.00 for a 4x4 and I shopped around calling places and looking on craigslist until I found a deal and they are out there... So go for it and do the convertion. I will keep you posted and I will take pics
DO IT!!! I am about to do the same thing. I bought a 2 door gold xj last month for 300 dollars with some cosmetic blemishes. Fixed it up to look sharp and still have some rust to repair in the tub. Got lots of time into it and had toyed with the idea of converting it. This past week I got a 4x4 same year as the gold one (93) for 250 DOLLAR shot gun trade. Much worse rust damage on the body. Mechanically much stronger than the gold. I am doing an axle to axle drive train swap, lift, and engine work all at the same time, then put the 31 inchers that came on the 4x4 on. Part out the rest, scrap it, and i should come out with very little or nothing out of pocket.

I did it too. $500 running 2wd XJ plus $300 4x4 non-running hacked wiring harness XJ + some new seals and other parts = 4x4 jeep, oh yea! I put more money in new, better parts than the 2 XJ's combined. My mentality is: well its broke or about to break, lets upgrade!
Look around and be patient for deals to come up. Best to buy a whole parts jeep cause its usually cheaper than collecting all the parts separably, plus you will have a ton of extra parts. Or look for people parting out their lifted rigs and score good upgraded parts for less than buying it yourself new
