Look at the rear axle where the driveshaft connects.

8.25 with the shorter early model yoke and collar.

Yep, I have the longer style yoke and I was wrong about my build date...it's 4/96, not 3/96.

Well I definitely have the later model yoke. Have we confirmed that this means I have the 29 spline yet? Does anyone know if I can tell by the vin if my jeep was a later production 96?

It has not been confirmed. The build date will be on the sticker inside the drivers door jam.

No, I looked at the 27 spline sitting in the garage to see if it would be possible to measure the axle shaft diameter without removing it and that will not work either. Looks like the only way to know for sure is to pull the shaft and count the splines. If you are pulling the cover to change the fluid, it would only take about 30 extra minutes to pull the shaft, count the splines, and reinstall the shaft.

As an update, I went to the jy this past weekend and took a more in depth look at the 96 XJ the newer style 8.25 yoke. Someone was kind enough to have the diff cover off and the spider gears removed for me when I got there so it was nice and easy to pull a shaft and count the splines, which was 27. It is apparent to me that the yoke design change was merely a change in year model and not a factor in determining if it is a 27 or 29 spline 8.25

Sorry to rehash an old thread but ive got a 27 spline from my 96 and two 29 splines, one currently in the 96. Gonna check all 3 yokes to add to this hypothesis this morning.
