257,000+ miles....
Is all she wrote.
Got a call today while I was working.
The XJ quit, they got it HOT! I work out of town, and no one was checking the water in the XJ. Well it got a gallon low and you can guess what happened next, they said the gauge was over 250 degrees and it quit.
WEll a $40 wrecker bill to get it home and I come in and hit the key.
It soulds like 2 of the 6 cylinders got compression. :banghead
I'll be overhauling the jeep this week. New rings, gaskets, rod bearings are about $150 .
I got to many irons in the fire and no time for this shick. Many I am piszed.

Who was driving and how did they not notice the coolant leak and the gauge pegging out? Losing a gallon of coolant is either going to steam out from under the hood or dump tons of smoke out the tailpipe.

Poor jeep. Im the only person that drives mine. Mostly because everyones afraid its gonna blow up on them (it has a bad top end knock).
How do you not notice the gauge, and say "oh, I should pull over and let it cool down"
Did they decide "Its not mine, Oh well!" or what?

Only certain people get to use my Jeep. My dad, because he's mechanically inclined and I know if it dies it's not because he did something stupid. My mom because she knows enough to stop when things go sideways, and my little brother because he knows I'll kick his .
I've only let one other person borrow it for a short jaunt to Autozone, and after watching him drive over the freaking median at 35mph, I had to restrain myself from breaking his kneecaps.
Have you thought about going stroker? I mean, hell, it's gotta come apart and be bored anyway...
Make sure you get the head checked, it could have warped or cracked. I would expect your gonna need to do a valve job, critical overheats like that tend to screw up valves.

Actually its the wifes daily driver.
She is as guilty as anyone, for never checking things.
but the driver was my mom, my oldest boy was taking his driving test today in it. It was about 100 degrees out.
Mom said she sent my "boy" to check the oil etc before they left. Well he opened the cap he said, and we didn;t have any antifreeze so he just let it be instead of adding water.
So life goes on.
I'll just do rings and bearings and let the pistons be.
After all it was a wreck when we bought it. We replaced two doors and a headliner, and used the seats and carpet from a parts heep make it nice again. Has a little quarter damage on the right rear corner. So its not a pristine XJ.
So just do a quick and dirty inframe and go on. I found parts for about $150.

But beware the hidden damage that will show up later.

My wife is smart as a whip, very well-educated (MBA) and quick thinking. More times than I can remember she has had an idea that solved a mechanical problem for me. But I have no doubt she could destroy an engine through simple ignorance. The ladies just do not generally think about these things and were not raised to do so. I have a daughter and even though I try, I cannot get her to develop any insight to machines. She is utterly disinterested. She writes poetry, gardens, and collaborates with my wife on shoe-buying expeditions. My son shoots guns, chops down trees, and daydreams about high explosives.
For better or worse, it is a man's job to maintain the vehicles. My wife has plenty of things to worry about. Her car should not be one of them.

I've been trying to get my wife into the xj since we bought it. Every time something new goes on, like a little kid, I run inside and drag her out to come look at what I did!
She won't drive it anymore because she's afraid of it and what may happen if something went wrong . I keep telling her that is ok, but secretly I'm glad she doesn't want to drive it.
