First thing I'd do is jack up the XJ by the frame (so the axle hangs) and figure out what's loose. Something is quite shot. Turning the wheel lock-to-lock and watching the front end will show what's bad.

Sorry, no solution. Alignment has checked out at two different shops. I just forgot about it as my Cherokee isn't "normal".

What do you mean by your cherokee isn't "normal"? Has the suspension been modified? I run 235's and they clear everything just fine.
