Default 231 to 242?

Hello fellas so i (aquired) a 242 t-case. Currently i have the stock 231. My question is= is it worth going to the 242? i know the viscous couplers like to get worn out and they are not cheap to replace. So would there really be a benefit going to the 242?

thanks for the input.

the 249 has he VC as it is a full time 4wd ONLY tcase. the 242 has a 2wd option AND a 4wd full time option. the 242 is comparable to the 231. it drops down farther than the 231. unless you live in extremely snowy or rainy areas i would just keep your 231. to much effort.

I like my 242 cause it has the full time, part time, and 4LO if it's just a bolt on why not put it in.

correct me if i am wrong on this so the 242 has 2wd, 4 part time, 4 full time, neutral, and 4low right.? Now four wheel part time would have to have a vc to be a part time right? Really dont know not trying to be a smart *****. I just had to do the vc in my wifes 04 exploder it was $400 my cost and i turn wrenches there! ouch!!!

There is no VC to be in part time.

It is chain driven.

Infact here is an exploded view of the 242.

Only the NP249 will have a VC

the the 231 AND the 242 are chain driven

the NP231 has the shift pattern of 2h-4h-n-4L
the NP242 has the shift pattern of 2h-4h full-4h part-n-hL
the NP249 has the shift pattern of 4h-n-4L

I'd stick with the 231 unless you really feel like runnin 4 all time. I'm not really sure if there is even an advantage to that anyways.

Im actually in the process of swapping in a 242 for my 231 right now. I wanted the full time option. I think I'll keep my 231 for a spare.

xj Kid ( or anyone else who has swapped Xfr Cases before), can you give insights into the swapping process? What were the challenges you had, and did you find any tricks that made it go faster or smoother? Did you also set up the dash light to show part time vs full time?

I plan to put a 242 into my 1993 Cherokee, as I live in Greater Seattle area & deal with rain a LOT, not to mention driving through water accumulations in portions of the freeway during major downpours. We also have been getting snow in the winter a few times as well, though the 4w high has handled that.

The swap was pretty straight forward, pretty much unbolt old one and bolt new one back in. I looked at the parts fiche and apparently the selector linkage is different so when I bought the used 242 I asked that they include all the linkage. I literally just swapped everything over. I haven't wired the dash light yet though.
