Ok so I just bought a 97 xj sport CHEAP, with an aw4 tranny.
SOO when you have it in drive, and you start putting and gas on, it instantly goes to about 2100 rpm, no more no less, and is very slow to get to speed. Once I hit 20ish mph, it shifts and speeds up normally. It idles right between 800-1100 rpm so that's good. Now what's weird, is that if I manually put it into the 1-2 gear on the shift bezel, it will drive fine! What is wrong?!

Maybe it's just me but the way you're explaining this is confusing as ****.

You're saying that as soon as you start the engine it idles at 2100rpm?

Your trans is starting in 3rd gear. If it drives correctly shifting manually its an electrical problem.
If you continue to drive without shifting manually you will ruin the trans.
I beleive you will find a solenoid problem.

Here is a link to checking out your problem.

What'll happen to the tranny if it keeps driving how it is
