There was no Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 in 2004. In Europe the Jeep Liberty was branded as a Cherokee for some years past the XJ model's U.S. end in 01, but it used the 3.7L v6.

Where are you located? In the U.S. the last year of the XJ was 01 and there were no Cherokee branded vehicles until the new KL. The KJ (Liberty) is not listed as having ever had a 4.0L (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Liberty_(KJ) though it seems folks have swapped them in.)
Anyway, if you have a Jeep I6 4.0L engine made in 2004 regardless of what vehicle body it is in, I would suggest that you might get the best help by going to the wrangler forums for later year TJ's and LJ's since the Jeep I6 was used until 2006 in the Wrangler. Folks here may be able to chime in, but the best results may be with the large number of folks that have Jeeps with an I6 from that year.

I think the Grand Cherokee had the 4.0 out to 04. I've never seen a XJ past 2001. Can you take a pick of your Jeep, door jam build date and engine bay?
What are your piston issues?

O.P. - Let me rephrase - you might get the best help in the Grand Cherokee section of this site.

my bad grand cherokee
it almost sounds loke a diesle at idle and has been driving me crazy ive yet to read about anyone replacing pistons 0n the 04 heard alot about 2000-2002 i was told they revised the pistons in late 03
in any case i parked it for now its been sitting for a month i just started it yesterday and its quiet as a church mouse very little noise
so im thinking maybe the oil pickup screen was plugging up from some piston skirt? causing the noise to get louder
dont know but i am going to pull the oil pan off tommorow to see what the #$%^ is going on in there

No worries - why I didn't think GC myself is my bad. It happens all the time and while there are a lot of things that are the same or comparable, and there are a lot of folks with wide automotive knowledge, we usually point folks to the specific forum so they can get the most specific advice.
Like Cummins93 I'm also curious about the piston issue.

well i finally dug into it took the pan off and found no piston issues what so ever nothing in the pan come to find out 2004 pistons are re designed and do not have the issues that the 1999-2002 have
what i did find was the timing chain was stretched out rubbing the rock hard guide causing it to sound like a diesle at idle
while i had the pan off i replaced the aluminum oil pump with a melling stock replacement cast iron pump along with a new pick up screen
then pulled a rod and maine cap only to find no wear on the mains and very little on the rods at 172.000 so i replaced the rod bearings while i was in there they were standard
also found the timing chain guide was hard as a rock so bought the cloys timing set with a new guide
its now quiet as a church mouse

Nice! I've been thinking of doing my own timing chain - motor on my '95 XJ is out of a '94 and has 160k-ish miles on it and is rougher than I'd like.
