Default 2001 Xj "NO BUS" Ideas?

Previous engine from my 01 xj was cracked. Replaced it. Dash indicates " No Bus"
Starter does not even engage when key is turned.
Ideas on how to get this engine to crank?

You likely have 2 separate issues.

1. The engine will not turn over. This is a starting circuit issue, not related to the crank sensor. The crank sensor is not involved with the starting circuit. Verify voltage is getting to the starter. Verify all cables and grounds. If this doesn't yield any clues, the primary suspect is the neutral safety switch. I am enclosing a link in how to refurbish that.

2. If the engine turns over but won't start and still has the NO BUS, then the crankshaft position sensor is the primary suspect. Actually, any of the 5 volt engine management sensors can short and create this issue, but the crank sensor is the most common. Try removing the connector from the crank sensor under the hood back by the firewall. Then turn the key to the ON position. If the NO BUS is gone with the crank sensor removed from circuit, you have smoking gun proof of a shorted crank sensor. However, if the engine starts and you still see NO BUS, then the problem is within the dash cluster.

Good luck and keep us updated!

what the last guy said seems right. I have a 99, and i had the "no bus" indicator at one point and none of my gauges worked. But i never had any problems with it starting/running, so i must be 2 different things. With mine, i figured it was probably a bad connection. So, i took the gauge cluster out, put dielectric grease on the connectors, put the cluster back in, and its worked flawlessly ever since
