Default 2001 Cherokee Sport: Possible First Car

I am interested in this Cherokee for sale: http://www.seautobrokersms.com/2001-Jeep-Cherokee/Used-SUV/Hattiesburg-MS/0/2991203/Details.aspx

This will be my first car and I need it to do the following things:
Tow a Small 21' Fishing Boat
Tow a 4-Wheeler
Be a reliable daily driver

My sister doesn't want to drive, but she needs to be able to tow her 4-wheeler and her boat. So, she has agreed to get me my first car if I will get one that will do the first two things. Will this Jeep do it?

Thanks for the help!

Xj's have a 5000lb towing limit. Your boat doesnt come anywhere near that, and the 4 wheeler either. You will be fine towing those.

One thing i would do, if the xj u posted doesnt have one, is upgrade your trans cooler if you plan on towing often or for long distances.

Pass on that xj buddy, costs to much and has no 4x4, you would need 4x4 pulling your boat out of the water im sure.

I 2nd what Oleblue said. Thats a really steep price for no 4x4. Also, XJs are great and easy to work on but they are just like everything else, if they weren't maintained well, you'll have problems. Their owner, who may or may not be competent enough to do so, usually also do the work themselves if they need repairs (myself included) so make sure that whatever repairs were done, were done correct and that the owner didn't do a bunch of cheap, simple repairs to mask a bigger problem right before selling it. I bought my 01 XJ limited 4x4, with upgraded aftermarket sound system in it with 163k on it 3 years ago for 3900, and it was in great cosmetic condition. The owner swapped out the radiator to hide a overly neglected cooling system. In my ignorance and inexperience, i brought a "mechanic" with me and he looked under the rad cap and said it was great, now im on the tail end of an overheating problem haha. Good luck brother!

if you look at 2000 and 2001s make sure the cooling system is in great shape because of the 03331 head that they have.

It looks good, but that is too much to pay for no 4WD. Like everyone else is saying, it might be hard to find a 13+ year old vehicle that doesn't need a little work or that hasn't been neglected in some way. Be real careful, look for rust and inspect the cooling systems thoroughly. When you test drive, make sure to get it up to temp and watch the oil pressure, look to see if it is above 10psi at hot idle.

I picked up my 01' a little over 2 years ago for $5000 with 89,000 +/- miles on it. I'd stay away with anything that has ABS, if it's got ABS it'll have the dana35 rear axle. Towing even a light trailer puts stress on the drivetrain.

Thanks for the quick responses; and thanks to Radi for fixing the link. I am judging by what you all are saying that I might should steer clear of this jeep or get the price way down. (I'm thinking $3000 based off NADA)

If this one doesn't work out, does anyone have any suggestions on a Jeep or SUV that would do it. Maybe a Grand Cherokee?

Thanks again for the responses. I am sorry about the link, I guess I forgot to put the colon in there!

Find a nice xj with 4wd and youre good to go. Or get a wj with a v8 if u want to tow wit more power. You can find nice wj's for 6k. I bought my 2003 overland with 108k miles, v8 h.o. for 6200 2 years ago. Nice nice rig!

I always liked having 4low for my dad's 16 footer. And that was a small boat. 21 feet is NOT a small boat. Lol
