i have a 2000 XJ inline 6 4.0 litre.....since a couple months ago ive had a noise that i cant identify..its a ticking/tapping noise. its noticable on start up and goes up with the rpms. when the jeeps all the way warmed up the noise is much quieter. i guessed it was coming from the engine but when the hoods popped it seems to be coming from lower down and back....something with the tranny? anyways ive searched on here and found two other threads that were somewhat helpfull.
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/sti...advice-133320/
and
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/ho...ocking-125547/

i dont think its my flexplate though because its not a "knock" kind of sound. im worryed it may be a rod knock or something with the bearings....things ive never dealt with since im a novice. anyways any help or advice would be greatly appreciated cause im quite worried about my engine/and or tranny ...whatever it may be. so please help me out CF!
thanks

It coud be alot of things man haha but from what I know it could maybe be a lifter? or loose flywheel bolts will cause it to knock. If you cant figure it out, try buying some oil treatment stuff. its $3 and if it doesnt work oh well it was 3 dollars

yeah. is that the reason it would get quieter or completly go away after awhile? cause the oils warmed up and they move better?

See man i dont really know, I told my auto techer about my lifter and he told me to get that stuff. I think it just cleans the motor and quiets it

I have a lifter tick as well, every oil change I use a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil, I also run 10w40. This helps a lot with the noise. I've also heard good things about engine restore https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/rev...ormula-130469/

I plan on trying it with the next oil change.

Mine also makes a ticking/tapping noise while driving but it also stays for about a minute after I shut it off. And it does it even if the motor is cool and I start it for a min then shut it off. So I know it's not the motor cooling down either. I'm confused as well. uzzled:

You could always get a stethoscope or make one to track down where exactly where the sound is coming from. Father and grandfather use it all the time, thats where i got it from and works well

Sound like popcorn in the crank case? Mine did that before when I would shut it off. 10w40 and it hasn't done it since.
