Really? That could be it cuz the sound does remind me of popcorn popping! I've been using 10-30 but I think I'll try it and see if it goes away.

It was driving me crazy, didn't matter how long the engine ran. I could start it up for 2 seconds and shut it off and still get that popping noise in the crank case. If you dumped some popcorn kernels in your crank case I bet it would sound the exact same.

My oil pressure has always been good, minor oil filter adapter o-ring leak and minor valve cover leak nothing unusual for an i6 with 200k. Otherwise it runs great.

I'm pretty darn sure this is whats up with mine. It has little minor leaks here and there but runs excellent for 190,000. The sound bugs me and I couldn't for the life of me figure it out. Thanks for the info

I've put about 20k miles on it since it started, so I wouldn't be too concerned about it. You might also want to try a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. Do a search on it, almost as many threads on it as there are for seafoam.

I'll do some research. Did you have to replace your PCV valve at all? And did you have oil in your air filter?

I cleaned my pcv valve out, and yes I did have some oil on my air filter. Cleaning the pcv out didn't have any immediate effect. After I changed the oil with 10w4 and a quart of marvel mystery oil it stopped. It's been 4 1/2 months since it last did it. Also I have not had any oil on my filter since.

Ok I'll clean the PCV valve out and to the 10-40. I just put a new air filter in last week and my old one was pretty oily. Of course, I dont know how old that filter is either but it Needed changed!

To add to the other suggestions, fuel injectors can make a ticking noise, too. In my case, I was chasing what I swore was a noisy lifter somewhere but it wound up just being the injectors doing their jobs.

Just got a little too noise sensitive, I think, since the engine was/is running fine...

Get a long screw driver. Hold the handle to your ear and place the tip of the driver on different areas of your engine. It works much like a stethoscope.

Touch the end of your driver to your oil pan with the engine running, or to your tranny, bell housing inspection plate, valve cover... etc. Should help you narrow it down quite a bit. No sense in playing the guessing game.

Had that issue with mine as well, ended up being the little solonoid thing above the firewall on the passenger side of engine compartment. I think it is part of the Evap emissions control.(97-2001). Mine clicks away like a clock and is louder at times(can hear it in the cab). My friend with a 2001 tj has the same device and his is completely silent, we even swapped them and mine was silent in his jeep but his was clicking in my jeep. Sounded like a loud lifter .

it took about ten minutes, rotate the flex plate so each bolt is at 2 oclock then you can get a socket on it
