Default 2000 XJ no start.

Working on my buddys 2000 XJ. He has been driving it everyday with no problems until yesterday he shut it off for a few mins and it wouldnt restart. It cranks just fine but does not fire. Has no gauges, ASD relay clicks on and off and the fuel pump is inop. Tried another ecu with no success. Battery clamps are tight and clean, main grounds are tight and clean, does not have an alarm or remote starter. Cannot check for spark due to coil on plug. Any thoughts as to the next step in diagnosing this?

Fuel, air, spark

Im not understanding why you cant check the spark.

Also, check the CPS with a DMM.

Cant check spark because it has the coil pack that goes on top of the plugs and I do not have an inductive tester. Am checking the cps soon.

Sounds like a fuel pump. Beat the hell outta the gas tank w a hammer. If the fuel pump is bad, u got a 65/45% chance the hammer will get it back going. Sometimes temporary, sometimes for good

I have no pump operation at all. Everytime you turn the key to on the pump used to run for a sec and with no carpet it was obvious. Now there is no signal from the ecu to turn the pump on (verified with a dmm).

Probably because using a mallet or hammer is easier and quicker.

The fuel pump not working is a symptom not the problem. Think outside the box guys.

Exactly.... it most likely a corrosion problem caused by the water. If the fuel pump works when its pop started, it works.

I had the same problem on my 98 XJ when I bought it not running. The ECU ended up being bad. The gauges are a sure fire sign the ECU is ****ting on you

That's not true. Its one likely possibility, but not "sure fire" still got the same ecu in my junk that was installed in 99/2000
