2000 xj KNOCKING SOUND Under Drivers Footwell
Hi Everyone i have a issue with my 2000 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT OF WHICH I Hear a knocking sound coming from where i believe near the drivers footwell or around that area.
i understand this is like a needle in haystack, but i've had the truck worked on and had all U-JOINTS REPLACED AS WELL AS A NEW ( low mileage transfer case) and 1300$ later i'm still hearing this knock.
* When i hear the knock 1. From reverse to drive
2. From drive to reverse
and i hear it MOSTLY WHEN GOING OVER SMALL SMALL BUMPS.
This KNOCK WONT HAPPEN WHEN THE TRUCK IS COLD ONLY WHEN ITS WARM OR WARMER OUTSIDE. HARD TO EXPLAIN
Had the front end checked, everything is tight or so i'm told.
My transmission shifts just fine and i don't feel that might be the issue.
I love my XJ it only has 75k miles and i really don't wanna get rid of this truck just yet, but i also don't want anything to snap off or break while i'm driving.
i've looked around the internet but cant seem to guess on what it could be nor do i want to keep bringing it to shops who cant find and fix the issue.
I guess i'm just looking for some advice on what this could be and maybe if anyone has had a similar issue.
kinda Don't know what to ask or say anymore lol Kinda clueless Do i just drive the truck until something breaks off to find the issue
TRUCK IS MOSTLY STOCK EXPECT FOR Billstein shocks in front and back and Bf Goodrich all terain 235 if that helps or makes a difference.
Thanks mike

Have the motor mounts been closely inspected or replaced?
The exhaust crosses overtop of the crossmember and is a known culprit for a knock or rattle, worn motor mount will make it worse.
Also need to check that the flexplate/flywheel bolts are tight.

See if you can take a photo of your exhaust isolator like Dumajones posted above, and post it here so we can eyeball it.
You may want to jacket one front wheel clear of the ground and inspect the u-joints on your front driveshaft for play. Not likely with your low mileage but worth a check. Also, grease your front driveshaft slip joint. I'm sure the rear driveshaft slip joint was properly greased with the TC was replaced (?).

You say stock, meaning not lifted, has any part of the front suspension been replaced? It could also be the bushings in the control arms, they do wear and the stockers aren't exactly bomb proof.

i wasnt able to get any picture of the knocking noise today guys i ran into another problem with my tv/tranmission kickdown cable the black end piece broke off when i dropped my flash light looking at the mounts and such areas
complete dope i am
And the t/c was replaced because AAmco told me they thought the knocking noise was coming from there , after installing the u-joints they put in. Yup i basically took a beating on the price of all u joints and another transfer case and it didn't help at all. Knocking was still there. Just didn't wanna go back to them after i spent what i spent to have it fixed and they couldn't fix it.
Yes the truck is stock expect for the different shocks and bf goodrich tires 235 i put on.
Had someone also say it could be the control arm bushings and i will get a few pics up tommorow.
sorry if i'm alittle clueless on some of these issues guys. I'm just not good with working on the truck or knowing where to look

My 2000 makes sometimes make a knocking sound from the trans tunnel area. It stops if I push down or pull up on the 4WD shifter. Might want to check that just to be sure. It's surprisingly loud, but apparently just part of the shifter mechanism resonating on the steel floor.

Engine: Supercharged 440 Magnum punched .60 - yeah right.. 4.0 like everyone else.
Check your trackbar as well. Make sure it's not moving. My bracket was just a tiny bit loose and it made noises like you describe.
Get a friend to come over and help you move the steering wheel, shift the tranny...etc. you'll never pinpoint the problem without mimicking the problem and getting your ears all over the source.
