Default 2000 xj engine knock...??

The jeep has 150k.. Runs Very good but sounds like a deisel.. Also sounds like i have a Very bad exhaust leak, with no cracks in the manifold. thicker oil just makes the knocking worse.. the knocking only happens when i first start the jeep then goes away after a couple mins.. I am thinking its time for a new engine..?? Or new jeep?? thanks for any replys, GLEN..

are u sure its the engine and not loose torque converter bolts that hold it to your flex plate? they are known for that...does the knock speed up with the engine or only at idle?

Well, you don't have too much to worry about if the sound you are hearing goes away after a few minutes... Major engine damage noises don't go away. Piston slap isn't really going to be an issue either, it is something that happens usually in a performance engine in which forged pistons have been installed in cylinder bores that have extra clearance for the greater expansion of a forged piston. What you are hearing is most likely your hydraulic lifters that have collapsed. It is possible that you have a problem with sludge buildup, or even foreign debris in you oil that may be blocking the small oil passages in your lifters, which prevents them from pumping up with oil to take up the lash in the valve train. Your repair MIGHT be as simple as an engine flush (or seafoam treatment in the oil, as these guys on here swear by it) But it may be bad enough that you may need to remove the lifters and physically clean them, and do a more thorough engine flush. Good luck with it, there are lots of great resources that can do a better job of explaining what happens to a clogged hydaulic lifter than I can.

thanks for all the replys guys, i REALLY appreciate it.. the converter bolts are tight, I tightened them about 2 weeks ago.. they were loose but not super loose.. as for the lifters i THINK that could be it.. The other day I went old school,, with a screwdriver and put it to my ear and listened around the block and oil pan..I couldnt isolate the knock but it sounded like its coming from the bottom end.. Its really not a bad knock but deffiently noticable.. It also sounds like i have a MEAN exhaust leak, with no crackes in the manifold..that noise is like a hissing at accelartion and is LOUD.. If it is the lifters I can swap those with the cyl head still in the jeep right?? I have done 10 or so head gaskets so pulling the head wouldnt be a big deal.. I think the hissing could be part of my knocking,,I dont know.. Again THanks for the help.. GLEN..

Today while driving i really noticed my loud engine.. It sounds like I have a MASSIVE exhaust leak.. Its really loud.. I know theres no cracks in the manifold I have inspected The manifold.. Its the two peice manifold and i dont think they can crack.. so i am thinking my knock and hiss chatter sound is a lifter problem.. So today i was looking at jasper engines.. 2200.00 for a remanufactured engine.. you also have to get a installer or automotive shop to do the install or jasper voids the warranty.. so i am looking at 3000-3500$.. think its worth it??? should i just buy a new jeep?? Anybody delt with jasper??? good company?? Let me know what you all think, Thanks .. GLEN..

Titan strokers from what i have heard are JUNK.. almost all of the guys that have them have problems.. The warranty is voided if you use differnt injectors..!! thats a crock of $hit.. ALso the wrranty sucks, 35000 miles or 3 years.. so i am just going to get a jasper remanufactured engine.. thanks for all the help its much appreciated.. GLEN
