Hi, I am a 17 year old owner of a XJ with 260k miles. Trying to figure out my issue with Cylinder 6 misfire.
When car is started, idle, and driving the exhaust is popping, kind of backfiring. Out of a leak in the muffler end to tail pipe, and out of the exhaust tip. The car seems to have the same power at low rpms but bogs at higher rpms and struggles to shift. I have had this issue before but as i drove for about a mile it cleared up and went away.
Today, I pulled the fuel injectors which seemed fine to the best of my knowledge, only having cracks in the plastic casing, for cylinder 6,5, and 3. I switched around to see any difference but have not ran the code to see if the cylinder misfire changed yet.
I pulled the throttle body housing and cleaned the sensors and body. The body and sensor had TONS of carbon build up.
I pulled the coil packs and cyl 6 spark plug which seems relatively dry and had some rust on it. I think spark plug needs to be replaced. Which is on order.
I was just looking for some guidance to help fixing my car on what this could be. The main issue is obviously the code but that the exhaust pops and backfires sounding like a cammed lawn mower.
That popping and bogging screams classic misfire start with the new plug and swap the coil to see if the misfire moves. Exhaust leaks make it sound worse, so check for cracks at the manifold. If it persists, test compression and check the O2 sensor. You’re on the right track XJs love keeping us guessing, but they’re worth the fight.
