im not to sure but i think you could use any year HO 4.0 litre block and cylinder head. just everything, such as the alternator, will need to be swapped over to the newer one, but like i said im not 100% sure if its that simple for instance the mounting holes for the intake and exhaust might be slightly different from year to year

Your 2000 has coil packs instead of a distributor so you would have to fab some simple mounting brackets for them. All your accessories would have to be switched over. Not sure what else.
well i could put my head on a 98 block right??? and get new head studs and head gasket??? i mean what could i do to get a motor in my jeep with out having to buy a 2000-2001 motor. anything newer than 99 is way to expensive 400 bucks for motors that got 200,000 miles is a rip off. lol. 98 motors go for 250 with 130k miles. so anybody that can help me out with what i need to know for sure thanks.

I just recently put a 1999 engine in my 2001. There were 2 things I had to change, one is the coil packs which is no big deal. The second thing however, is still an on going problem. The exhaust ports on a 00-01 are smaller than on any other years. This meaning that if you put a motor that is a 99 or older, the exhaust manifold from your jeep will not cover the entire exhaust port on the head causing major problems. You cannot simply switch the exhaust manifolds due to the 4 O2 sensors in your manifold. What I did was just used the manifold gasket from my original head to help cover the larger exhaust port which is working good enough until I find a better way to fix this. Other than this it was a simple swap between motors.

what about putting the 2001 head onto the 1999 block?
that is good question can u put a 2000 head on a 96-99 block???? or make a custom exhaust manifold???

I was told that you can swap the head but keep one thing in mind. The 00-01 were really bad about cracking between the number 3 &4 cylinders. Mine was cracked at this location so I didn't have the option of trying to swap them or I would have. Maybe someone else on here will have the sure answer on the swaping heads for you.
bump! i need more help here lol!

Its best to go with 2000 to 2006 engine not much difference in price, take time find good one out a wreck. 1996 to 1999 will work with change over ignition system coil s and distributor - exhaust can be modified with a good muffler shop and insulation fitting of o2 sensors.
A Jeep Grand Cherokee engine will not work motor mounts and accessory are different.

yes you can take a motor out of a 1997 cherokee thats an inline 6 just make sure you set up the distributor up right and you should be good to go
