I have an issue with my air conditioner. The air has not been cool in Jeep since I bought it. I checked it out and the compressor was not coming on. I metered the clutch and was getting 12 volts when I tuirned on the switch for air. The clutch was not pulling in. ( I checked the low side and it had about 45 psi at 85 degrees, it appears to be ok.) I went to the local junk yard and got a clutch from the same model unit and it went on great. the clutch is pulling in now but, my pressure drops to 10psi when the compressor comes on now. when the compressor shuts off, my pressure returns to 45psi. I figure I have a leak or two so..... what do the experts think? I can not hear any leaks, but maybe I shouldn't. Thanks alot for all the replies. Bill

 

The pressure drops when the compressor turns on because your system is low on coolant (at least this was my experience). Hook up a bottle of coolant and when the compressor kicks on, squeeze the trigger and release when the compressor turns off. Took me a few minutes but eventually the compressor stayed on, the pressure was good, and my coolant line was cold and dripping. Freezing cold A/C sure was nice! Hope yours works out as easily as mine did.

 

I had the same exact problem. I just hooked up the filler can with the guage and opened the valve. The clutch eventualy remained on. Kept the the r134a flowing until I reached 30 psi... emptied the can. Now I have cool air... I could use more to get about 40 psi.

 

Thanks for the good advice! I did what you said today and the air is cold..... guess I will have to check it after a week or so and see if my pressure has dropped. If it has, i will have to find my leak. Thanks!
