Default 2000 Classic - no start? Any ideas?

Hey, I have a 2000 Classic with the factory installed alarm. I think it may have been an option in the year, but when you put your key in the ignition you have to wait for a dash light to turn from red to green before you turn it over - there is also a security light in the gauge cluster. Well last night the key is in the ignition and the light won't turn from red to green to allow me to start. Its like the jeep isn't recognizing the key or something. Tried like 10 times last night, and this morning - no start. Very frustrating because the jeep runs great - any ideas, or anyone else have the same security system on their XJ? Thanks.....

May be the key battery is low. Try your second key and see what happens.

The red light on the dash should go off with the key in the run position. If its recognized. Im assuming your key has the grey plastic head.

Thanks for the replies....unfortunately I don't have the second key (the previous owner only had one). It is the key with the grey plastic head. I'm thinking maybe it has become "unprogrammed" for some reason, because the light stays red and will not go green. Its like the jeep is not recognizing the key anymore. I'm going to call a Jeep dealership in my area to see what is involved in reprogramming the key (hopefully it doesn't cost a mint). Thanks

Check your locksmiths too may be cheaper plus theyll come to you saving you a tow bill. a dealer is not the only one who can program those keys.
