2000 Cherokee Sport Bangs when coming out of 4WD

This winter when I put my Jeep into 4wd with the select shifter it went in fine. When I went to disengage it -it stayed in 4wd some 30 seconds to a minute later or so then there was was a loud BANG as it went into 2wd-this has never happened before. You could feel something jumping underneath !! Any ideas..TIA

1 how fast are you going when you take it out of 4wd?

2 what transfer case is it?

3. road conditions?

I always stop and revers about 10 feet to disengage 4wd. but mine sees very little pavement
