I had to press the old XJ into service as my commuter because my Escape plowed a deer last week and is in the body shop.
I drive 54miles each way to work, The old Jeep never goes over a few miles from home, The Jeep is pretty nice still, but the 4.0 has a noisey lower end so I don't drive it very far, But she stepped up today.
However, On my way to work my dash went dead, No Tach, Speedo, nothing! And the odometer read "NO BUSS"
At same time the Check Engine light came on too..
I assume that means there was a communications issue with the ECM because the jeep still ran fine. I stopped and looked for any loose connectors, wiring damage etc, found nothing...
I released the steering wheel tilt lock, and banged the **** out of it up and down. Beat on the dash a little.
and WALLAHH !! The dang thing came back on and worked fine...And the engine light went back off..
Two questions:
1, What exactly does "NO BUSS" Mean ?
and
2, What do you think ? Maybe as simple as a bad/ loose connector under the dash somewhere ??

It is usually a cluster connection type of problem.
Check YouTube and search for JEEP CHEROKEE NO BUS. There are a number of how-to videos on how to resolve a NO BUS issue on the XJ when the engine still runs well.
You can also search this forum and any other Cherokee forum for threads on this issue; it is very common.

the buss is a computer communication system that goes all over the car to provide control or data. it feeds data to the cluster, all gages. its just like the usb bus on home computers, cell phones, everything!
loose connection="no buss"
