2000 Cherokee: hatch light on until headlights are turned on?

2000 Cherokee: hatch light on until headlights are turned on?
On my buddies 2000 Cherokee his hatch open light on the speedo cluster is on constantly until he turns his headlights on the light turns off. Anyone have this problem before?
