Default 2000 4.0 thermostat heater hose return

Saw a leak on the ground this morning. Looked around the engine bay and saw that the leak was possibly coming from the metal tube from the thermostat. I am not sure what exactly the part is called but I think that I found it.

Part that I think is correct is

Dorman Hose 56398

Yes, Dorman 56398 is the right part. Here's a couple others...

Those little metal pipes tend to rust out eventually. Unfortunately, you have to pull the water pump to replace it.

I always considered doing this but never did.
Get one of those short brass barbed fittings in the proper pipe thread size to put there instead of the tube.
And would need a longer heater core hose.
And if you could work this out could cut the black tube and wrench the rest off without having to remove the water pump.
Just for illustration. No idea what size that is but should be easy enough to find out.

I did exactly what Ralph said, I was a mother to get the pipe out, but was accomplished. You can place the hose clamp just so, that way it can be removed without too much effort in the future. You will need longer hose, in my case the hose replacement is what led to the tube removal as the top 1" or so stayed in my old hose.

I currently have a 3" black pipe nipple on mine. The heater hose fit nicely on the other end with just a hose clamp.
