Default 2 ?'s ona 97 xj where do I start to diagnose the heat problem + engine temp

Whats up guys so the heat on my xj is not working, the air on the vents is blowing but only cold air is released, is this a heater core replacement? if anyone has pics & directions on how to change, & whats the technical level for a non mech?

second question it's been about 45-60 temp wise here in NC after jeep has been running hwy for 15 min, what temp should i be hitting, My xj seems to run cold. is this a thermostat issue? I have an additional transmission cooler. if that makes a dif.

gracias

See if your heater control valve is opening, make sure you have vacuum to it,as far as the engine running cool,it could be your tstat sticking open,

The heater control valve is located against the firewall on the passenger side in the engine compartment, you will see the heater hoses going to it. Switch on your heat and see if the valve moves, engine on.

Your engine is designed to run at 180-210,if it is to cool it will not have complete combustion as it does at normal running temp, mine runs a little cool but it runs pretty good.

If it does not move you will need to see if it has vacuum,if it does then the valve needs to be replaced,if not trace your vacuum lines back to the resevoir in the bumper, vacuum goes from the intake to the resevoir in the bumper front right, then to the vacuum switch mounted to the climate controller, then out to the heater control valve.

Another possibility if the heater controls are working per abovetimberline. With the Jeep up to temp and the heater on both hose's under the hood that go to the heater should be hot. If the heater core is clogged only 1 will be real hot.

to start, what temps are your vehicle getting to? Is it staying real cool or reaching normal operating temps? More info could help us help you... If you switch the temperature selector from hot to cold or cold to hot is there any difference at all in the air temps coming from the vents?

If your jeep is running cold it won't blow hot air util the engine is hot, and that takes more than 15 minutes in winter, especially if it is running cold.

OK.. I have been up early to put my Turkey in the smoker....so I like to spend time learning on this site.

FrankZ.......Can you please explain how the heater system works on a 97...if it does not have a Control Valve. My heater works great, except for the blower speeds and I am finishing that up today. Looking at my 97 ChkSpt..the heater hoses go directly from the themostate housing / engine to the fire wall. My engine runs at about 190-200F....All the magic, for heat control must happen under the dash.

Thanks...the Judge

The core has constant flow. Airflow is through the core is managed by the vaccum operated blend door.
