Well I would like to know if it would be a good idea to put in a resonator after the factory muffler or if that would just be pointless. My moms 1998 cherokee has a rusty muffler that leaks pretty bad and she wants it to be as quiet as possible.

I was looking at something like a factory resonator off a wrecked vehicle and just have a muffler shop weld it on. Would that cause to much back pressure?

She only uses the jeep for daily driving and pulling a hay trailer every now and again.

 

From what I understand, resonators don't create any more back pressure, they just reduce exhaust noise; especially at highway speeds. I'd replace the muffler too, if it's that bad off.

 

Yes I will be replacing the muffler to because she said she smells exhaust fumes in the cab. What is the quietest muffler I can buy? Is the factory muffler the best or is there better.

 

I guess a Walker Quiet flow would be the choice. I had it awhile back and seemed decent.

I never had a stock muffler so I don't really know but that combined with a resonater should do the trick.

 

Hmm.... I will look into that and see. How quiet is the muffler? My jeep has a well broken in glasspack so I know how loud they can be.

 

My guess is the factory didn't install a resonator due to the location of the tailpipe to the gas tank. Take it to a muffler shop and tell them u want a stock/quiet muffler.

 

The cat and muffler and resonator combined will help reduce noise.

 

yeah a stock muffler should be quiet enough theres not much room for a resonator under there a lot of muffler shops use glass packs for resonators so no they dont affect back pressure at all of course but theres just not much room

 

I will see if there is enough room in the morning, right now there is extreme lightning and thunder along with rain and fog that makes visibility zero even with 4 extra fogs and headlighs. so going outside is a no, mabey even a H**L NO.

 

A resonator won't do any good even if you can find a place to put it if the muffler in front of it is rusted out. The exhaust won't make it to the resonator.

A stock equivalent muffler will be pretty quiet and not too expensive.

 

Like I said before, I plan on replacing the muffler and mabey even the rest of the exhaust with a new one. And to your second question, Thats what I want to know. What is a good muffler. obviously I know that a flowmaster 40 series is quieter than a cherrybomb glasspack, but what muffler is quieter than a stock exhaust?

 

 

There ain't nothin' quieter than stock.....and there ain't no Flowmaster any where near as quiet as stock.....not even the 70 series. Muffler shops install tons of stock muffs everyday.
