Hi I am thinking of replacing the 2.8 v6 with an inline 6 cylinder in my 85 cherokee will the 4.0 fit and if so is it a drop in bolt up deal or is it a hole lot of choping cuting and fab work in order to make it fit?
Also how hard is it wire the injection?
The 2.8 is shot and was not that good to start with what are the options

 

i have the same jeep as you, with that being said, i have came to the same thought of swapping motors. its it possible, yes. worth it, most will say no, i tend to agree with the negative side, there is fab work needed to the firewall, and a few front end prts dont fit, as well as the wireing and drive train components (dont quote me on that one) im not going to elaboratly lay out the entire engine swap process with all its complexities here, im sure others will chime in soon. instead im going to stop typing so you can go look at your local classifides or wherever fo an xj with a 4.0. also i would keep the 85 as a parts rig or fix it up with an engine that will fit better. good luck
