Default 2.5L 4cyl reliability

I have a friend looking at buying an 1985 5spd with a 2.5L 4cyl. Add says 167k miles with a new engine 20k ago, but I have yet to mine if its actually new or just rebuilt. How do these run? It will be used mostly in the mtns, rarely wheeled unless I can convert him. Thanks

I have a 87 cherokee with a 2.5 I am rebuilding right now, and have found that it is a good little engine and lacks real support in the wheelin world, it seems they like there horsepower but if you have the right gears and trans you can wheel with that 2.5 just as good as any 6 cylinder with better mpg on the street.
What do you think the old Toyota pickups have in them, 4 cylinders.
It is not how fast you go up hills but how good you can crawl, posi's or lockers also help a lot!

I have a '99 with the 2.5L. Slightly different I know, but it has gone 169k without a single problem and not a very easy life.

I have a 93 that has the 2.5L with 204k miles on it. No major issues at all, and it runs great. It is a really reliable engine, and I've put it through a lot.

I also have a '93 with the 2.5 and 217,000 miles and still running strong. Some issues but less than I would have with many others engines at 215+ miles. I would feel very good about buying another Jeep with the 2.5.
