Default 2.5 L carb stalls at over 1/2 throttle ? HELP!

I have been trying to get my 85 XJ 2.5 l 4 cylinder up and running. It does not have enough power to go up hill or over 55 mph. I have replaced the yfa carter 1bbl, dist cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires. fuel pump, fuel hoses/filter, dropped and cleaned fuel tank. the vacuum lines were missing and I have tried to replace, however I just got a chart and think some are wrong. it is a 3 speed auto and when it starts lugging down going uphill it will down shift if gas is floored. But then the throttle sticks wide open, engine stalls, it eventually recovers enough to crawl on up the hill but then i have to stop and unstick the throttle by hand on the underhood carb linkage. The sticking seems to be caused by the strong amount of vacuum created from wide open throttle. Could the stall and lost power be a timming issue? caused by the MCU? any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
