See what others say...Normally the Puter' matches the year (group), and the engine. No, the 4 cyl puter will not work in a 6. Grand might have different mounts....Not sure if the harness for the 6 will work in a 4 Cyl. But hey! Maybe I'm mistaken!

96 was a transition year Btw. Some stuff might be like a 95, other like a 97. (at least for the 4.0, I'm not positive about the 2.5)

I looked into swapping a 4.0 into the 87 2.5 I had. Decided it would be easier to swap a small block chevy in it than a 4.0, even though I had a complete 4.0 donor Jeep. There are a lot of differences between the 2.5 and 4.0 Jeeps.
You'll need the engine, tranny, engine mounts, radiator and its mounts, exhaust, computer, wiring harness, etc. It's a lot of work.

Sometimes I wonder how hard it would be to graft in a 250 chevy straight six and a four speed ???

I figured that would be too tall to fit under the hood.

I did an in-frame on one back in the mid-1980s. But that was in a 1966 chevy pickup and you could climb in there and go to sleep beside it if you wanted

Correct.

GC is a POOR choice for engine/tranny swap.

A 2.5 stroker from 505 Performance would be a simple plug-and-play possibility.

You still out there? You can see all the comments about the grand stuff not fitting. It would be lots easier to get the donor engine from a 96-97 Cherokee. You can get the wiring and ECM while you are at it and make life easier. I did a quick search online and found plenty of running junkyard motors around 400 bucks. 96 was a bastard year, outside and interior look like 91-95 but the motor has some of the stuff from the 97. If you stick to Cherokee and 96-97 you will have it much easier.
