Default 1999 Jeep Cherokee Stalling issue

Well, I just purchased a jeep xj as my first car, because of their solid reputation. The other day after taking it on the parkway for the first time, it ran fine, until about 2 miles after getting off when i was idling and my jeep stalled. I tried starting it but it would only start if i pumped the gas. Then on my way home it stalled 2 more times and left me stranded. Some times the jeep just stalls like you turn it off, others it gets kinda jumped and then dies. My check engine light came on the the jeep is throwing a P0190 code. This is a fuel rail pressure sensor circuit malfunction code. I cannot really afford to bring the jeep to a shop so im stuck fixing it myself. If anyone could give me any advice that would be awesome... Thanks!

I'd start by renting a fuel pressure test kit from your local auto parts store and test the fuel system pressure at the rail... Do this when the jeep is cold and also after it has been run long enough to reach normal operating temperature... this is important.

I have another vehicle that started and ran fine when cold but would develop a low pressure issue when the vehicle was at operating temp, causing it to stall right after starting, and hard-starting afterward... I would have to prime the fuel system several times by cycling the key between off and run before it would restart.

Try the key trick the next time it stalls out... there's no hard & fast rule about how many times it takes, but it can help to build the pressure required to get your engine started again.

Speaking to a technician friend of mine, depending on how worn or even damaged the pump is, the tolerances inside can open up sufficiently when hot to cause the low pressure problem, which explains why it works just fine when cold, at least in my case.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.
First of all we need to know the basics. Such as year, model, engine size and trans. When posting you should include that info since there a some differences between them.
