Check fuel economy.gov! According to the website the 4.0 gets better mileage than the 2.5.

 

And I would rather have the 4.0L's torque and horsepower over any marginal fuel economy savings from the 2.5

 

You get about 17 city and 20-21 hwy. Lousy performance, though.

 

My 1996 Sport with 4.0 and auto was rated 15 and 19. It typically does better than the window sticker indicated. I've gotten in excess of 22mpg on extended drives, and generally get 16-18 around town. I would much prefer to have the 4.0. At 70mph it turns less than 2200rpm, and if you put your foot in it, it gets pretty lively.

That said, if you find a screamin' deal on a super nice condition XJ with a 4cyl, drive it and see what you think. If the power delivery suits your driving style, buy it.

 

Yeah, I can get 21 with my 4.0 and five speed, but I've just got glasspacks and no cat. Some jackwagon cut it out. At least nobody cares in Idaho. Farmers cut them off because they start brushfires too easily.

 

Wouldn't advertise too much about your missing cat on the forums.

Perhaps a few Leo's are present here.
I clocked my 4.0 at 15 mpg but I have a lift and 33" tires.
I have also heard of the 4cyl not up to par for the Cherokee, but like stated
above if it suits you and it's in nice shape do it.

 

Rules state that as long as I'm not talking about how I removed it or explaining to someone how to remove it and not replace it, it's fine. Let me find the link, no?
