Default 1998 transmission cooler lines

I don't know why I always have such wonderful luck with transmission cooler lines, just went through this on my cummins. I've got a leaky line (actually I think it one of the quick disconnect fittings) so I'm just going to replace them both, but I have two questions;

1- does anyone happen to have any part numbers? All the parts stores/summit etc list 4 lines, but I just want to do the two up at the cooler..... I guess I could just go to the dealership and have them print out a diagram with the part #'s like I had to do for the cummins

2- anyone ever replaced all that quick disconnect crap or make new steel braided lines etc? I wouldn't be opposed to redoing it all to make it simple and get rid of the leaky disconnects...

Replacement cooler lines are available from O'reilly and Advance auto parts. They are a Dorman product. Rockauto has them as well.

I don't have the part numbers handy but finding them on line at the above parts supplier's websites is not rocket science.

I know where to get them. Problem is there are 4.... And without a diagram w/part numbers NO ONE seems to know which go where.

Hell I'll just buy all four. Problem solved I guess

There's only three tubes.

The tube that goes to the radiator upper fitting to the rear fitting on the AW4 is the return tube. This is a two piece tube assembly:

Upper (front) half (radiator) is Dorman # 624334 (OEM 52028328), lower (rear) half (to AW4) is Dorman # 624355 (OEM 52028605).

The tube that goes to the radiator lower fitting to the front fitting on the AW4 is the supply tube. This is a one piece tube assembly:

Dorman # 624354 (OEM 52028566)

The tube connectors on the AW4 are Dorman # 800-714

If u r going by the diagram in the FSM, it is wrong/reversed. The upper fitting on the rad is the return line (cooled fluid) to the tranny, the lower fitting on the rad is the supply line (hot fluid) from the tranny. I have verified this when installing a auxiliary tranny cooler.

You're right, I revised my post. The other data I listed is correct however.

Pic for the heck of it.

Thank you for all the info! I very much appreciate it! The parts store window lickers can't be trusted.....

You may also want to replace the oil line connectors at the transmission. When I pulled my lines out to replace them, the O-rings in these connectors came apart.

It depends on the year, on 96 and older XJs it is reversed with the hot line going in the upper rad fitting and return line from the lower.

Indeed.

The tube connectors on the AW4 are Dorman # 800-714

Replaced mine while I was at it replacing the tubes (lines).

Good to know. I'll have to look that up.

That's interesting.....here's a pic from the '98 FSM showing the hot line entering the top of the cooler, which is incorrect for a '98 anyhow. Wonder if '98 and '96 FSMs have the same pic? Would u possibly have the same pic from a '96 down FSM? This would be good info to share with the Forum.

I don't have a copy of the FSM, though I would imagine someone probably does. I verified this on my 95 when I installed my cooler, I've read several previous threads/posts on this (I'm not 100% sure that 96 was the change over year, it could possibly be late 95, 97, or even possibly very early 98, though 96-97 makes sense, since it was the time of the "redesign"). They may have just never updated the pic in the manual, it even still shows the RENIX style vertical oil-filter adaptor.

I have a pic of the removed lines somewhere that I can post but I don't think you can make out which is which.

I just looked in the 2000 and 1994 FSM's. The illustrations are exactly the same as my '99 FSM and djb383's 1998 FSM.
