Apparently my XJ wasn't equipped with these. There are pockets in the front spoiler for some lights, but the holes aren't cut out all the way.

Is it possible to put some kind of fog lights in there?

Has anyone done this as an aftermarket type mod, or is it better to try to locate the stock units?

 

I don't see why you couldn't. The spoiler was preformed to allow just that. I'd almost bet too that the wiring is in there.

 

I cut out the panel, and found a set of lights at Wal-Mart that fit the holes, and look almost like OEM. I then mounted a small black switch where the OEM switch would have been and a relay right behind the driver's side headlight. The relay is triggered by the dash lights in the aftermarket radio harness. So, if you leave the foglights on they go on/off with the parking lights. I plan on mounting an OEM switch one of these days...

 

I don't know if would put them there, if your ever planning on doing any off road driving, they will get ripped right off, that location is way to low..But if your POOR Jeep never see's rocks then it would work just fine.

 

There's a big difference between off-road and rock crawling... or so it would seem. Our Jeep sees quite a bit of off-road time, but have never had to worry about hitting the lights/bumper...

 

My XJ won't be doing much offroading for about two years, per the agreement with Mrs. buckshot prior to her letting me buy it.

So these lights will be ok till then & after that they will be too far from the ground to matter anymore.

Right, because everyone buys a Jeep with the intentions of off roading. Open your mind a bit man. I bought mine for a daily driver, my POOR jeep, I'll never drag the side against a rock, please.


ON TOPIC. why not, the factory put them there and I'm sure you can find OEM looking replacements. Go for it! Looking to add some myself.

 

I have a 99 and did mine a couple months ago. I went to the local Pick a Part and gathed up a stock switch ( cut about 7 inches of the pigtail with the switch) and get the two relays from the power module, they are marked on the lid. The fog lights were all bad so I got mine from US Auto Parts for about 35 bucks each. The ones at walmart look to be about the same size and a heck of lot cheaper. I used one relay for each light to keep the relay heat down. If you can find good fog lights at the JY cut the wires a few inches past the connector it makes wiring easier.

12vt from Batt with a fuse to the relay and out to the lights blue wire and the lights black wire to ground.

Tap the hot side of the cigar lighter to the hot wire on switch (this kills the switch when the key is off) and switch ground to ground side of cigar lighter. Use 14 guage wire for the lights and power to the relay. I used 16 guage to power the switch.

If you are good at electrical work you will be able to figure this out to make it look stock. If not just use the instructions in the walmart fog light kit.

This is just a rough instruction since I did not wright down the the relay connections I used and don't really want to take the center out again. I should have drew a schematic and posted it here, sorry.

I don't remember, and don't think I still have the box. Next time I'm there though, I'll take a look. I made a bracket on each side out of flat bar. Otherwise they just bolted in. Seems like they were around $20. I picked up a different switch and relay at O'Reilly's. I really wanted to go with OEM lights, until I started pricing them... I really wanted to replace all the door lock actuators too, but...

i have a jeep similar to this one i took out my stock light and was to lazy to do it right so i bolted them up underneath the original spot to the bottom of the... do-hicky there. went mudding two weeks ago and killed them both rofl teach me to do that again

 

Thats not cool. Some use there jeeps a daily driver/weekend wheelers, some strictly wheeling, and some only see pavement. My philosophy is if your gonna put a a bunch of money into aftermarket suspension parts and tires then it will be wheeled, but some people think otherwise which is fine. Wheeling usually equals tearing stuff up which costs money so its a smarter idea not to wheel it but yeah know.
