1998 classic amplifier bypass
I was wondering if anybody has bypassed the factory infinity amp under the back seat before, I can not find anything on it all of the posts are for the grand cherokee. I feel like it makes my aftermarket speakers sound like crap with the aftermarket alpine head unit I have. I would like to do it myself but if i can't figure it out I'll have my local audio shop do it. Thanks any help would be great

Somebody had been at the amp in my '98 but it's such a mess I've never really worked it out. As far as I can work out, it's just been unplugged & new wires, presumably for the speakers, spliced in with Scotchlocks.
I assume the amps bad, or why else disconnect it? so no real enthusiasm for restoring it to original (besides it's got an aftermarket head unit, which I've never really got on with).

With the aftermarket head unit already i would just pick up a aftermarket 4 channel amp, run the rca's and new speaker. power and ground wire and jam.

I'm surprised you got any sound out of it let alone something resembling good music...Your Alpine and that unit are probably different OHMs to begin with and the "amp" has a digital processor that filters a bunch of your speaker signal on the way through..The infinity amp isn't compatable with much in the aftermarket unless it's made specifically as an infinity replacement...
You're on the right track with trying to get rid of the amp completely... Only two options really... Figure out which is the input and output wiring at the amp and simply splice them together for the easy way out..
Or do the correct/better quality route and run new, heavier speaker wiring from the Alpine head unit to your aftermarket speakers as already suggested ...Considering how old{and small} the factory speaker wiring is...And the fact it always breaks at the door hinge area after years of the door opening/closing I did just what I'm describing for my new system...
Ha.... You got me... I didn't look at the OP's date and just replied...But the answer is still the same...LOL....Martin, in the future just open a new thread there's plenty of members willing to offer some help ...
