1998 cherokee won't start
hello there i have an 1998 cherokee sport and I'm having some starting issues. this has been a reoccurring issue since i bought the jeep. i have already changed the follow, new starter, new alternator, new battery, after i changed those it started fine in till a couple months after. i got it looked at mechanic said it was my neutral safety switch but wanted to charge me 600 dollars to replace it. i took it out cleaned it and greased it put it back in and my jeep started fine for a good couple of months. about two days ago my jeep wouldn't start. I'm wondering if maybe its time to just buy a new neutral safety switch or if something else could be causing the problem.
thanks.
thanks.
What are the symptoms? Cranks over? Has spark? Has good fuel pressure?
Bad nss it won't crank over
Bad cps Cranks but no spark
bad fuel pump Cranks with spark but no start.
More info will help diagnosis.

Your no start can have many reasons. NSS is just one. so, in order to not having to go through all possible scenarios, please provide some more info.
Is it a crank but no start?
Or is it a no crank (and therefor also no start)?
Have you tried wiggling the NSS before attempting to start, or try starting in N instead op P?
Despite new alternator and battery, do you now have good voltage?
Depending on additional info, we can provide you with more sensible advice, since no-crank no starts have some other causes than crank-no starts.
(BTW, have you done any testing/diagnosis before replacing the above mentioned parts?)

it started to not start in park and i could usually always get it to start in neutral
two days ago it would not start in neutral or park, but i wiggled it back and forth between the two for about ten minutes and it randomly started in neutral.
yesterday i spent about 20 minutes wiggling it back and forth between the two but nothing happened, no start no crank no nothing. sorry i don't know how else to describe it.

I hope you didnt ' grease' the internals when you cleaned it.
The intermittent character points towards an electrical cause.
Make sure your battery voltage is sufficient, and all connections involved in the starting circuit are clean and tight. Intermittent electrical issues can also be the result of poor grounds. Just to name a view causes of your no crank no start.

Well, that could be the NSS, still. It could just mean it needs readjusting.

Despite that advice, I've always wondered why one would put dielectric (is non-conducting) grease on the tiny little contacts like within that NSS. Around the edges to seal out moisture and dust etc, yes. good thing. On the actual contacts, I'd say no. But thats me.
Keep us updated how you go. We'll get it.
