1998 Cherokee Blower Only Works on High
I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. I was using the AC with the fan on 3 (1=Low, 4=High) and the blower suddenly stopped working. I could not get any blower function unless I went to 4 (high). Now it only works on high. I am guessing the fuse is still good or it wouldn't work at all. Someone mentioned something about a resister pack. Where would I find this and does anyone have pictures or a nice how-to? Maybe a part number? :-) I know, I ask a lot.

So, I have to replace the whole blower motor? There isn't something I can fix? Or are you saying that to get to the resister pack I have to drop the blower....

Might be a vacuum leak. HVAC systems all default to defrost for safety reasons whenever anything goes wrong with them. My F350 defaults to HIGH on the fan, too. Snort around under the hood first and see if there's a loose vac line.

def. the resistor. b/c on high all voltage goes around the resistor. if the resistor is bad, then you will only get high. like they say behind the glove box. piece of cake.

sometimes they are repairable if one of the metal wires are broken on it just find where its broken and solder it, sometimes there isnt a break and one of the components are dead. repaired mine and grabbed 2 extra from the junkyard just incase.
definitely the blower motor resistor.

We don't live anywhere near one another EMAXX, so I know it wasn't you who took 'em all from my yard, and maybe your yard is just bustin out the front gates with the last three model year cherokees but...Well, I'm just venting I guess.

Yep, resistor block.
Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
Remove the kick cover from the heater-A/C housing. See Kick Cover in this group for the procedures.
Pull out the lock on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector to unlock the connector latch Blower Motor Resistor Remove/Install
Depress the latch on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector and unplug the connector from the resistor.
Remove the two screws that secure the resistor to the heater-A/C housing.
Remove the resistor from the heater-A/C housing.
Reverse the removal procedures to install. Tighten the mounting screws to 2.2 N·m (20 in lbs.)

Y'know, it sucks to drive 45 minutes to go to the yard, spend an hour looking for the right years to get a part you NEED and find out they're all gone because someone got there first and took 'em all, just in case.

Bought a new resistor for mine today. it was only working on high. put new one in still only works on high. started smelling a burning plastic. shut it off and looked under the hood to see plastic ozzing out of the ac clutch. hope I can get away with just the clutch assembly?
