1997 XJ 2wd to 4wd transmission swap
Hey all, I have a 1997 2wd XJ that I am in the process of swapping in 4wd parts. A friend of mine told me that I have to specifically use a 1997 donor transmssion because the gray tcm plug is different in 1997 than all other years of it''s generation. He says it is more roundish than rectangulaar. But if I dont use the 1997 transmission I have to swap out the entire harness, tcm and ecm. Any body run across this situation? Thanks for any help anyone can offer

Late 1990.5 to 1997 will bolt up and have compatible sensors. Do not go 1998-2001 as the sensors changed and will not shift correctly. If you don't go with a 97, you either need to do some cutting and splicing to get the connectors to match OR drop the pan and swap the harness over from your existing transmission. Not hard just messy, literally a three spade connectors and pull the harness out. You'll need to swap the NSS over from the other trans as well.
