Does Britain have any kind of thing similar to carfax? I know it would cost money to look it up but it would probably come in handy in case anything is ever questioned. By chance, did it come with any documentation? Owners manual, build sheet (usually found behind the driver or passenger door panel)?

That's not true, at least in the U.S. where catalytic converters started to be used on some cars beginning in 1975. (Fuel injection did not become common here until about a decade later and it was not universal even then.) There have been many cars here equipped with both catalyst and carburetor.

What is the VIN number?
The first digits will tell you where it was made. Mainland China has left hand drive cars, but if made in Singapore they are right hand drive, so the number will tell where it was made.

It also has R.H.D stamped in various places.
Maybe my car should have a catalytic converter ?

Had a look around, there are no stickers in door shuts at all..
Also, I’ve never seen a head liner like this before ?
Its so basic it doesn’t even have central locking !

Let's quit obsessing about the year and the fact it's a Euro model unknown to us and get it fixed.

I'd start by wiggling the carb.

The first gen XJ was produced until 2005 in China. Then they updated the interior, nose and taillights and called it the BJ 2500 or something like that.

Well, I am from China. a Cherokee XJ owner. this rare RHD XJ was truly produced by BJC.
BJC made RHD XJ from 1991 I think.
2.5 carb version(1985-1999) 2.5 MPI version(1992-2006?)
On the firewall, BJ2021R is BJC's' RHD XJ model type
