Default 1997 Cherokee-u-joint replacement and other knowledge?

I just purchased my first cherokee-a 1997 XJ with 200K on it. Still runs, starts, stops, idles, and shifts. However, turning was a big issue. As soon as the thing starts to turn, you hear awful noises and if you go too severe the wheel locks up for a moment in the direction of the turn. As far as I know, this is a major u-joint issue. Because of that, I'm getting this thing towed the 80 miles to my house either today or tomorrow. But I guess I wanted to make sure you folks agree and also, what else can people tell me about the 97 cherokee? I know this was the big update year and I'm not a huge fan of the dash-it lacks a lot of info that I would really prefer to be seeing like my temp and whatnot-unless I'm just a fool and it's electronically there and I just didn't see the controls for it.

Thanks and looking forward to getting this thing perfect,
Nate

Well, you could go here: http://www.alldatadiy.com/about_alldata/index.html and look up all the TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) and recalls. You won't be able to look anything up without buying a subscription, but it can give you a heads up on some things. Then go to Jeep's website and enter your data and see what recalls were performed. You can also call your local dealer with your VIN and they can tell you what needs to be done and what has been done.

I just replaced both front drive U-Joints on my '97. Jack up one of the front wheels and turn the wheel back and forth...check for slop at the joints...sounds like yours are wasted like mine were.
