My original distributor had to be replaced because of a failed bearing. I went with an aftermarket for less than $100 that came complete and have not had a problem.
Hi BruceB,

You are correct about using the vin to verify the correct distributor.

unfortunately the dealer that supplied the part number never asked for the vin.

I didn't think to question it. I was unaware there were multiple choices.
Now I know.

What brand distributor do you have?

thanks,
Joe

It doesn’t really matter to me as long as the person I’m talking to is thinking the same thing.

$ 5.00 sure beats $77.00.
I wanted a new factory Mopar part. The correct one for my 96 is even worse at $111.00

there is a newer aftermarket one in there now. It’s working, but I don’t trust the cheap ones

I’m familiar with the crank sensor.

thanks,
Joe
Hey Joe,
That aftermarket one will die in about 9 days, exactly. Better start planning on it. The cam sensors are worse than the crank, there really is no substitute. Been there I think at least twice.

Thats what I'm afraid of.

Ill install the Mopar part and carry the aftermarket as a spare.

I drive to many back roads with bad cell service to risk breaking down, so I do what I can to prevent that.

in my experience they dont break down on the road just when you go to restart, no start.

purchased mine from Summit Racing and it has lasted a couple of years now. I think back when when I priced an oem it was over $400 just for the distributor.
I think some of the online discount warehouse parts sites sell the cheapest sourced parts they can find. Never really had luck with any of them.

Right, the usual big boxes surely do use the cheapest source they can find. I bought a distributor from there and while the distributor was great, the plate was just another knock off, it wouldn't start after about a week and a half. Purchased mine from U Pull U Save and that was 5 yrs ago. $5

good morning,

When mine quit I was driving. So I replaced it with the aftermarket one in there now, because it was the only one available quickly.

My new Mopar part was just delivered this morning. Disappointed, but not surprised to see it’s made in Mexico

I did have a crank sensor fail like you describe on a different xj

thanks,
Joe

I have had good luck with Summit stuff over the years. MSD ignitions for hot rods, etc.

Its pretty crazy how cheap some of the online parts are. I see these pickups for as little as $15.00.
I like a deal but I hate breaking down more.

thanks,
Joe
