Default 1996 Xj Cherokee RHD Gearbox

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this. I just joined to group today. I just purchased a 96 XJ Cherokee on Sunday. The thing is immaculately clean and I got an amazing deal on it. It is also RHD, imported from Japan about 4 years ago now. Has all paperwork from being imported, to recent maintenance parts receipts, all with life time warranties. The gearbox has play in it and is leaking. I can almost turn the steering wheel 90°. My question is will a LHD gearbox work on a RHD vehicle? Also do you guys with RHD's have any where in particular you get parts from?

steering box are handed, so you need RH box.

if all else fails, you could import a used box from Australia, but they are fairly expensive, I dont think you would get one for under $A300..so $US200+

it cost me about $100 freight to import used diff gears from USA

This is what I would do

1st, make 100% certain the play is in the box, not elsewhere

if the internal gears within the box are worn, they must be replaced

download the 'Parts Manual from cruiser54 website

compare the part nums for the 2 main gears inside the box...I think they probably will be the same RHD vs LHD

if so, you may be able to rebuild yr RH case with LH parts

only a few suggestions for you

I ordered a rebuilt gear box for my 95 RHD from Rock Auto, you might look to see if the gear box is rocking on the frame rail, my frame rail was cracked under the gear box when I toom the box off

VERIFY the problem first as suggested.
Steering boxes are also adjustable.
