Default 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sputtering while Accelerating

So i been having this problem with my Jeep for about a 2 months where when i step on the gas it sputters in the middle of it. Seems to only do i when it gets hot or if i press hard on the pedal. It won't however do it (as far as i can tell) when i step VERY lightly on the pedal.

Took it to a mechanic and had him look it over and told me my Fuel Pressure was at 70 when it should be 49. He wanted to replace the pump he told me cause the regulator is in the pump not on the assembly. Well i got it home and for sure it was on the assembly. Normally these arent replaceable per Chrysler but i took the housing off and did so.

Now its still acting up and im running out of options. Pump is 4 months old(bosch),New filter, it passed inspection leading me to believe the cat isnt clogged. Only things i havent tried are a tune-up,MAP and TPS. ASD code 42 comes up when i cycle the key 4 times. Any help i would appreciate as im stumped and local mechanics dont seem to know what the problem could be ethier.

Your 96 has an obdII scan port, drivers side under the headlight switch. Stop by a parts store and get a free scan. I think the 42 code is a PCM fault, but a scanner will give you a better idea.

I forgot to mention that I took it to Advance and no codes will show up just the cycle 4 times thing works.

Haven't tried a tune-up?

Every 30,000 miles:

New plugs, wires, cap and rotor......

I prefer NGK plugs, premium cap and rotor from Napa and Napa's Belden wires.

Would a tune-up result in my car dieing unexpectedly?

Possibly, if your coil wire were bad.

So, is it sputtering or dying?

How long have you owned it and for how many miles? Know when it was last tuned?

The sputtering when gassing it is usually a TPS problem in most of my cases. Very accessible to boot.

It's doing both as I accelerate sometimes it sputters sometimes not but most likely it will and then die on me while driving.

Been second owner since 2009 and it has sat since 2012. 140,000 miles never tuned as far as I know.

Hoe would I check the tps if it were bad? Im going to do a complete tuneup on Tuesday along with coil and fuel filter. If that doesn't solve it then it's something severe.

I wouldn't bet on it being anything severe. Most likely just a simple fix with the electronics.

I understand there was a recall with this jeep but I don't know what it is for. Would this maybe be the problem?

DoubtFul. They had some recalls for electrical problems, but I think they were related to exterior lighting.

I remember when I called Chrysler about the fuel regulator that there was a recall for the PCM something to do with the catalytic converter. Might not mean anything just a thought.

So what does everyone recommend for tuneup parts? Any specific brands?
