I can’t get my Jeep to start I changed out the crank position sensor with a new one oem Mopar sensor set the timing on the distributor because the previous owner messed it up and it’s all set up right now I believe because the rotor is at 5 o clock and the index mark was at 0 on the pulley when I go to crank my Jeep it just keeps cranking no start back fires after a couple cranks and you can smell gas and new spark plugs put in I’m needing help

Is the pickup coil under the distributor cap clean, undamaged, and installed correctly?

Have you had a chance to verify (with your eyes) there is spark at the plugs at TDC?
If the spark plug is out (and grounded) you should be able to see the spark and feel/hear the 'whoosh' of air when the piston is at TDC. Just to verify it's in phase and there aren't other ignition problems. That would be the first easy and quick thing to check ....if you haven't already.

Did your 1996 ever start after you bought it from the previous owner with incorrect timing? If not, then follow a no start condition list of procedures.

Yeah the Jeep Ran when I bought it I drove it home but it was backfiring po said the cps had been changed and water pump and new transfer case .i changed out the cps because I was told that could be the problem with the backfiring but it didn’t fix the problem also the tps was broke when I bought the Jeep so I bought a new one and the Jeep still cranked but backfired after changing these parts new spark plugs gapped at 35 still backfired I went to go crank it a couple days after the plug change and it wouldn’t crank tested the ignition coil with a spark plug and wire and the plug was firing orange so I have a new ignition coil on the way and a new timing chain because the Jeep has almost 158 thousand miles I put the Jeep at dc and made sure the index mark on the pulley was at 0 next I checked to make sure both valves was closed popped the dissy cap off and the rotor was pointing at 7 o clock so I pulled the cam sensor pulled the dissy set the slot in the block at 11 o clock dropped it in pointed the clamp at 1 o clock set the distributor in rotor pointing at 5 o clock bolted everything down
