I have a 1996 Cherokee that's sat for about 6-7 years. As you can imagine it has its problems,and slowly getting it better and better. One thing that it needs is new shocks. It has LT235/75R15 tires with no lift. It's basically stock.

I want decent shocks for it all around,but I have no clue what's good for this sense I never knew what it drove like with factory shocks. It's really just a daily driver,so I don't need anything fancy with resevoirs or stuff like that. I'm not a fan of the really really smooth rides of new vehicles nowadays. I do like a little bit of bumpiness,but not much. I do want to be able to go over the chewed up interstate without feeling my scoliosis get worse and worse as I drive over pot holes at 70 MPH.

I know it's not a Cherokee (like I have now), but my last SUV that I had, a 1992 Ford Explorer Sport, I replaced the shocks with a set of Rancho RS 5000's, and they seemed to do the trick. They were a bit stiffer, for off road use, but they made a huge difference out on the highway. I plan on putting a set of them in my 95' Cherokee, because I think the ones in it right now are the original.....

 

I like Monroe Sensa-Tracs for about $30 each. They have a firmer
control than the cheaper shocks but I wouldn't call them harsh at all.
I've had mine for over three years driving on African roads, no problems.
37083 and 37027 fit a stock Cherokee.

 

I just replaced mine with some Monroes that I got off RockAuto, they were like $30 each. The ride is nice on road, not to soft but not to firm.

Would you say they're good for the price? Seems like it's between Rancho RS5000 and these. I sort of want the Ranchos,but I don't if I'm judging too much on price.

What do you mean exactly? They're the stock springs so nothing special.

 

I mean, are they still arched properly or do they look like they're worn out.

The thing is, a set of shocks won't cure what ails ya if the springs are shot.

 

I haven't looked too closely to be honest. I won't be able to look at till tomorrow. What am I looking for exactly?

 

Take a look at the rear leafs... if they are flat or shaped like a frowny face, then you will want to replace them.

If they are arched like a smiley face, then they are good yet.

When I bought my 89 I did all corners with springs and KYB shocks for ~$400, but it can easily be done cheaper.

 

Is it difficult converting from leaves to springs in the back?
