1996 Cherokee won't take off initially when in drive
Here is a picture of some of the trouble shooting suggestions chart from the service manual for the AW4. I boxed in the red for what I think you should look at.
Attachment 292748
It takes 3 or 4 (4 quarts each time) fluid changes at different intervals to get all the fluid changed. If the fluid is really old, I would do 2 more fluid changes and see how it behaves after.

I had the exact same problem in my chevrolet impala I am not sure this will help you since we are not talking about the same car.
For me it was the TPS (throttle position sensor) that was the issue, I tested it with a voltage meter. I think you have the same issue here as well, and there are instructions floating around the forum on how to test it. Also, from what read, if it is indeed the TPS then you should only get a mopar replacement because people were not to successful with aftermarket TPS on our XJ's.

BTW, have you done the kickdown cable adjustment? Not sure it's your problem, but it's free and easy to do.
That button might not move as easily as in this video. If not, hit it liberally with some penetrating oil, and move it move it move it until it moves freely.
