Default 1996 Cherokee No Cat and No Oxygen Sensor

Hey guys, how's it going? I'm new to this whole forum stuff, but I needed help and figured if I could find it, I would find it here. Anyway, here's the situation. I have one week until I have to get my 1996 Jeep Cherokee SE inspected. 4.0 liter, 5 speed, 4X4, all the good stuff. Now for the bad...in place of a cat, it has a straight pipe with no O2 sensor. I'm going to buy a new cat with the O2 bung, but I cannot find the wiring for the O2 sensor and the check engine light is obviously on. Does anybody know where this wiring hooks up to and if I could buy new wiring? I think there's supposed to be a connector for the O2 sensor, but I don't see it anywhere. Any information would be great and pictures would be phenomenal. Thanks.

I have a 96, 4.0, auto and the connector is just to the left of the cat (or in your case where it belongs) where the body is formed to allow the tranny to fit (the hump I don't know the technical names for it). Just looked, almost even with the t case end of the rear driveshaft there is a plastic retainer and mine is clipped in there. Any further up than that, I'm not sure.

Alright, thanks. I'll check again. Hopefully I just missed it the first time and it is located somewhere under there.

Yeah looking up at the t case end of the driveline, you shouldn't be able to miss it. If it's not there, see if there are 4 wires going to nowhere running from the engine. I think there are only like 4 or 5 sets of wires running to the t case/tranny direction from the engine anyway.

My 94 has the o2 sensor pigtail along the oilpan, theres a chance it may still be there after the swap to OBDII (96+).

Mine runs up across the t case and from there I loose it, will have to look when it's light outside if you have no luck.

Yea, I had no luck so far. I just can't seem to find the wiring. Does anybody know where it should come from the engine? Maybe I can track it from there.

If noone else comes up with an answer for you before Wednesday I will try to get some pics from the local junkyard. I will be making a trip for a scavenger hunt and I know there are a couple of 96s on the lot.

That would be great. I have work till Saturday, so I don't have much of a chance to do anything otherwise I'd try to take a look at another Cherokee. Saturday I have to put the cat on so I need to know where this supposed wiring is so I can get an O2 sensor and hook it all up so my check engine light goes off. Again, if anybody knows where it hooks up into the engine bay, that would be great to know. Thanks, again everyone.

they may have cut the darn plug off... look inside any of the wire bundles with the plastic crap covering them anywhere close to the exhaust or something... may find some cut off wires...

Yea, I'll have it up on ramps tomorrow when I change the oil, so I'll do an in-depth search. Even if they're cut, I hope I find them. If they're ripped out of the engine I'll be SOL.
