a couple of thoughts... why not just bed line the interior (granted noise and heat can be issues if a DD), if you wanna keep carpet, then id assume that the old carpet isnt an issue, but its installing the new rug over the shifter that is the issue. any way to simply cut enough of an opening to allow it to slip over? it will be partially hidden by the shift position indicator anyways. the surround on my 99xj is like 4" wide, and like 6" long, so that would allow for a large gap in carpet w/o it showing.

REAL hard! Seriously, that's all I did when I replaced my shifter handle and the new one just got pushed on REAL hard!
